Liberi A Torn And Thriving Nation Of Western Africa

Liberia Today Today Liberia is a recovering and thriving nation in Western-Africa. It was created by a movement from the United States in the 1840’s that allowed freed slaves the opportunity to move to Africa to attempt to make a life in a more accepting environment. Liberia has a very eventful history to include events such as a civil war, coups, being the first independent nation in Africa, and also elected one of the first female presidents in Africa. During the civil war, which occurred from 1989 until 2003, the residents that were of American desce nt were vilified by the tribal controlled government. This resentment of the Americo-Liberian people can be attributed to the attempts of President William Tubman to reach out to all residents of Liberia, including the Americo-Liberians, and extend the basic rights such as voting. President William Tubman was president of Liberia from 1944 to 1971 when he died while still in office. President Tubman was one of the most effective presidents in Liberian history. During his time in office, he fostered a major modernization of the main population centers. During the later years of World War II, President Tubman strengthened bonds with countries such as the United States and France. He also attempted to make Liberia self-sufficient on its most important sustainment crop, rice. Following World War II Liberia experienced an economic boom, caused by Tubman’s open door policy that facilitated streamlined trading with international partners and allowed Liberia’s main expo rts; rubber and iron, to be sold and exported more freely. This boom lasted until the late 1960’s at which time the international rubber and iron prices started to fall. This led to the halt of the economic
